DIY Barista Coffee and Latte Stencil

As I was frantically snapping photos of my low-carb and vegan Cashew Matcha Latte, I realized it needed something extra to make it pop!

With no time to waste, I put on my thinking cap, ate some almonds (for brainpower), and came up with a quick and creative solution.

Lo and behold! I crafted a barista coffee stencil that would take my latte game to the next level, which also resulted in an impressive look!

All while knowing I had a deadline looming for my next shoot, capturing the perfect shot of some delectable low-carb eclairs (post coming soon).

Materials You’ll Need

While pondering about how I could create a quick barista coffee stencil, I realized that it should have a handle or lip to adjust it in place and be slightly bigger in order to cover the rim of the mug.

Additionally, I also thought it should be somewhat durable, just in case I mess up, to avoid having to redo the stencil again. As a result, I ended up grabbing what I had around me in that short space of time.

Believe it or not, I had the following materials at arms reach:

  • Large adhesive label – it’s sticky and has a shiny surface that allows for multiple uses of the stencil.
  • Paper – a letter size or one that is the same size as the label will work.
  • Scissors – to cut out the stencil shape.
  • Pencil – to trace around the mug
  • Utility or X-acto knife – for precision cutting in creating your design.
  • Cutting mat – to protect your table
  • Serving mug or cup – to use as a guide for the stencil’s size.

How to make a DIY Barista Coffee and Latte Stencil

1) Gather all the materials and prepare the stencil surface

  • Gather all the necessary materials. Once you have everything you need, lay the cutting mat on a table and put a piece of paper over it.
  • After that, peel off the sticky label and place it on one side of the paper sheet. Make sure to smooth it out well to avoid any creases. You should end up with a thick sheet of paper, with one side having a slightly glossy appearance.

2) Draw a circle to the size of the mug

  • Place the mug on the sheet and draw a rough circle all the way around it, as this will be the guide for the rim of the mug when it comes to placing it over it later.
  • Next, cut the sheet around the circle, leaving enough space (about half an inch) so that the stencil can sit on top of the mug.

3) Draw your design and cut out the solid shapes

  • Draw a fancy design or motif in the middle of the circle like my drawing. I found it on the internet and drew it freehand to save time instead of printing one out.
  • Cut out the shapes of your design since these are gonna be the gaps where you’ll sprinkle some cinnamon, powdered sweetener, or matcha.
  • If you have time, you can erase the pencil marks to reuse your DIY stencil and make it look a little more fancy. As I was in a rush to shoot my latte, I skipped that entirely, as you can see, haha!

4) Place the stencil over the mug and sprinkle your powdered topping

  • To decorate your coffee, latte or cappuccino with this DIY stencil, place the stencil over the mug filled with your frothy drink and sprinkle your desired topping over it.
  • You can use a strainer to avoid any lumps of powdered topping falling into the drink. For example, I sprinkled matcha powder lightly over the stencil using a small tea strainer.
  • Distribute the powder evenly all over the stencil to ensure it falls through all the holes.

5) Gently lift the barista coffee stencil to reveal your design

  • Carefully lift the stencil away from the mug and make sure to keep it flat to avoid any powder falling into the design.
  • As you lift the stencil, you will reveal a beautifully crafted pattern on top of your drink, which is sure to impress anyone who sees it.
