Why You Will Love Low-Carb Baked Churros

Low in carbs

If you’re looking to transition away from traditional flours like all-purpose flour for your baking and low-carb lifestyle, you’ll find that almond flour and coconut flour work together beautifully to create a delicious churro-like texture in this recipe. This combination not only enhances the flavour but also aligns perfectly with your dietary goals for eating less sugar.

Gluten-free

This is a gluten-free recipe since the flours, are both gluten-free alternatives to traditional wheat flour. Additionally, the other ingredients used, such as monk fruit sweetener, eggs, and butter, do not contain gluten. If you need to avoid gluten completely, make sure all your ingredients are certified gluten-free!

Guilt-free indulgence

Each crafted heart churro is an excellent substitute for traditional churros, and you won’t notice the difference once they are coated in the typical cinnamon sugar. Additionally, since they are baked, there’s no need to overload them with high fat.

Carbs and Servings in Low-Carb Baked Churros

This recipe yields 12 delightful heart-shaped churros, perfect for special occasions like Valentine’s Day. I love making these for my husband and girls to share the joy of the day.

under 5g net carbs per serving

  • 35.9g of carbohydrates
  • 34g of fibre
  • 2.5g of net carbs

If you prefer, you can easily make traditional straight churros instead. Each churro has about 2.5 grams of net carbs, allowing you to indulge in a few dipped in warm, melted chocolate while keeping your carb count in mind. Enjoy creating sweet memories with your loved ones!

Ingredient Notes

  • Almond flour: The perfect substitute for all-purpose flour used in traditional churros. It reduces the carbohydrates in the recipe and provides a healthier alternative.
  • Coconut flour: Helps to create a glutinous dough that stays in shape while piping.
  • Whipping Cream: 35% or heavy whipping cream helps to give the churros an extra lift.
  • Salted Butter: Keeps the churros slightly moist and buttery
  • Water: Aids in creating moisture for the dough to cook correctly.
  • Xanthan Gum: When heated, it thickens the cream and butter. You can buy it online or at any grocery store.
  • Vanilla extract: A little essence helps to balance the taste.
  • Whole Eggs: Helps to give the churros structure.
  • Sweetener: Sweetens the dough a little, and you’ll use extra to mix with cinnamon to make low-carb cinnamon sugar
  • Cinnamon: A couple of tablespoons mixed with sweetener are sprinkled over the churros.

How to Make Baked Heart Churros with Low Carb Flours

I will eventually add images to show you how I make these delectable treats, but you can always head over to my Instagram page to see how I pipe the hearts.

Make the Dough

  1. Preheat oven to 325F and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the almond flour, coconut flour, sweetener, and salt in a bowl and set aside.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, stir in the vanilla extract and set that aside.
  4. Heat the water, butter, and cream in a shallow, nonstick saucepan until the butter melts and steam rises.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat, sprinkle xanthan gum gradually, little by little and whisk vigorously until the mixture thickens to a light cream custard texture.
  6. Add the flour mixture to the saucepan and combine wet and dry ingredients with a wooden spoon to form a dough.
  7. Return the saucepan to low heat, stirring continuously until a soft dough forms and comes away from the sides of the pan.
  8. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool ( about 5 minutes ). Then, stir in the whisked eggs.
  9. Mix the dough until thoroughly combined to form a slightly sticky batter.
  10. Allow the dough to rest for about 5 minutes.

Pipe heart shapes and bake the churros

  1. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a Wilton 4B tip (a wide hole with a star shape). Then, pipe the dough into heart shapes on the parchment paper.
  2. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the surface is slightly golden.

Coat the baked churros in cinnamon sugar

  1. Mix the monk fruit and cinnamon in a shaker to make the cinnamon sugar.
  2. When the churros are baked, remove the tray from the oven, brush them with melted butter, and generously sprinkle the low-carb cinnamon sugar over each heart.

Serve warm baked churros with melted chocolate

  1. Melt the chocolate chips and cream together in the microwave in 20-second increments, stirring in between, until smooth and silky.
  2. Serve the churros warm with melted chocolate. Enjoy!
